RJ #10 punished

 Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I have read PUNISHED! By: David Lubar, which is a new author to me. My favorite quote is on chapter 1 page one paragraph one “This is a terrible idea” I liked it because I thought the book was going to start with the mystery, I was wrong but I still liked it. My favorite part of the book was when Logan was PUNISHED.
This book is about a boy named Logan who is hardheaded and silly with help from his best friend Benedict.  Benedict wants to be student of the month so bad because you get a coupon for a free pizza from the best pizzeria in town that he decides to do his school report the same day it is assigned thinking it will get him in good with his teacher Mr. Vernack. Therefore, he drags Logan (who already won the award two months ago and is saving the coupon for the perfect day) to the library to get started on the report. However, as soon as they get there, Benedict tags Logan who cannot resist a good game of tag, so he runs after Benedict. Then, he bumps into a middle-aged man Logan says sorry, but the man thinks he is irresponsible and he should be punished. Logan, now scared sees the old man take out a dust old book and blows it in Logan in face, then disappears. Logan meets up with Benedict and heres how the conversation goes “cut it out! You almost got me in trouble!” (Logan says) “Sorry” (Benedict says) “will you please try to behave your shelf?” “What?” “Behave yourself”. Then he goes home and meets his mom, “did you find everything you needed?” (Mom) “Yup eyebrows the books all the time to see what’s new “(Logan) “I browse the books the books all the time too. I really enjoy it” “ Alphabet you do” “ I’ll bet I do too” “ I don’t see what’s so punny.” “very punny”. Logan’s punishment is everything he says for the rest of his life will come out as a pun! So has soon as he comes home from school the next day he goes to the library and meets the man  and asks him how he can undo the punishment. He gives Logan a camera that can only take pictures of oxymoron’s he has one day to find seven oxymoron’s. After he gets the oxymoron’s the man gives him a bag that only sucks in anagrams so, Logan has to get seven anagrams. After that he gives him rubber bands that only rap around palindromes so, he has to get seven palindromes and the punishment is lifted.

I used six strategies in total while reading this book, two before, two during, and two after.  Two during are: 1) I read the title and I thought it would be an interesting book 2) I skimmed and scanned the book to see the authors order of organization (chronological order). Two during: 1) I would summarize after each chapter. 2) depending on what the chapter was about I would predict what the next chapter will be about. Two after: 1) I thought about the main idea of the book 2)I discussed it with my mom.
The Protagonists were: Logan, Mom, Dad, Kaylee, Benedict, and Professor Robert Wordsworh,. The Antagonists were: Benedict, Professor Robert Wordsworh, and
Mr. Vernack .
The genre of this book is Mystery the sub genres are: fantasy and educational. The tone and mood were Mysterious. The moral was never play in the library (lame, right?) (but the book wasn’t lame). P.O.O was in chronological order. The P.O.V was in first person (Logans). The author’s purpose was to entertain and educate. The figurative language was oxymoron’s , anagrams, and palindroms.
I recommend this book to students who like to read a good mystery and learn something new ages 10-14.
I would rate this book 8-10, because it was a good book and educational, but chapter 8 really lost my attention until chapter 9.

         Sincerely,
            Shianne Salazar

Title: Will Steve Jobs final vendetta haunt Google?

Author: Michael Lytle

Source: The Miami Herald

The topic of the article is Steve Jobs claiming that Android company has stolen ideas from Apple

The main idea is that Steve Jobs claims that Google stole his creation the iPhone and gave it to Android.

The author's purpose for writing this was to inform

The author's perspective in this article/ subject (biased) because the article talks about Steve Job's is angry that Google is taking his ideas and giving it to Android.

The pattern of organization is cause and effect

The reason the author chose this pattern of organization is because he wanted to show what happened and what the effect of that was.

The text features included in the article are subtitles that helps by giving extra information. A picture of Steve Jobs that lets the reader know who the article is about without reading.

This article is about (a summary in your own words) Google taking Apples ideas and Steve Jobs gets very angry.

The significance (importance) of this article is to inform people on what Google did.

What I learned from this article is to never copy someone's idea no matter how much better it is than yours

What I liked about this article was really nothing I guess I liked the pattern of organization but I really did not care for the article.

What I did not like about the article is that in my opinion it was boring and uninteresting

who should read this and why are people who are interested in Steve Jobs because this article was about what Google did to Apple.
New vocabulary I learned

1.Vendetta        Haunt                    Private fight 2.Bureaucracy  eliminate            body of official

Jonas Brothers RJ #8

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,

I finished reading JONAS BROTHERS by: Maggie Marron. The genre of this book is biography. I got this book on my own because I used to LOVE the Jonas brothers so I thought it would be cool to read about them to get more insight about them. I thought since I was reading about them I should do some research too. Throughout those 3 days I learned a lot about the Jonas Brothers, My favorite part of the book was when Nick got diabetes, not in a cold mean horrible way, I liked it because that was one of the most emotional times in their lives and they wanted to do something about it, they did benefit concerts for research and donated money, a lot of money, so that just showed how grateful and generous they are.

I used six strategies while reading this book, two before, two during, and two after. The two before are: 1) I read the prologue. 2) I looked at the table of contents to see what each chapter was about. The two during: 1) I read all of the subtitles and quick facts (there were a lot, and they were very helpful) 2) I summarized what I had just read. The two after: 1) I summarized the whole book in my head. 2) I discussed it with my mom. These strategies where very helpful while reading.

The main idea of the book was talking about the Jonas brothers and how it all began up until chapter 3. I learned a lot while reading like, Nick got discovered in a barber shop, then went to Broadway and soon after his brothers did too, then they all went to TV ( commercials) but they weren’t done on Broadway. Then, when Nick had to make a Christmas album for Broadway that got into the hands of Steve Greenberg otherwise known as the CEO of Columbia records! The brothers formed a band The Jonas Brothers. At first they were so excited they started writing song after song but the company kept rejecting every song so they had song specialist wright their songs but their producers never liked it but finally it took almost a year for then to release their album and a lot of the songs were covered from other bands the album was called: It's About Time, not just because it took forever for them to release their album it's also because all of the songs on the album where about time with songs like: 6 minutes , year 3000, 7:05, Time for me to fly. The album was a huge..... FLOP! Selling a disappointing number of 62,000 copies. Then Columbia dumped them, so they had a very disappointing holiday season, but in February 2007 Hollywood Records also known as Disney a way more successful and powerful company signed them and made there album: Jonas Brothers and took them less then half the time it took them at Columbia records. Their record was a huge.... SUCSESS! They were on there way. Then made Camp Rock, Jonas, Jonas L.A, Camp Rock 2 , and Jonas brothers living the dream.

The text features of this book are the table of contents, bold faced words, a lot of pictures, a bunch of captions and a bunch of quick facts.

The book is written in 3rd person point of view because some one was narrating. There were similes, and metaphors (because the boys were compared to a lot of things)

Now, Joe is a solo singer and has just released his second album. Nick is now a music producer ( he discovered China Anne Mclain as a singer) Kevin is now happily married.

If I were to choose another name for this book I would name it Jonas Brothers living the dream. The authors purpose was to inform.

I would rate this book 10-10 because it reminded me about on of my favorite celebrity’s and it had captions and quick facts.

I recommend this book to girls ages 12-16 that enjoy reading about there favorite past celebs.

Sincerely,
Shianne Salazar

P.s. I'm listening to them right now!

John F. Kennedy RJ #7

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,

I just finished reading John F. Kennedy: A photographic story of a life. By: Howard S. Kaplan. The genre of this book is biography I got this book on my own because I didn't know anything about John (Jack) F. Kennedy and I thought it would be interesting learn about him. My favorite part of the book was when he married Jacqueline Bouvier because he finally settled down and that’s around the time he got a career in politics.

I used six strategies while reading this book, two before, two during, and two after. The two before are: 1) I read the prologue. 2) I went online and looked up some facts about John F. Kennedy to know a little about him before I read. The Two during are: 1) I read ALL of the subtitles to find out like quick facts ect. 2) I would look at the title of the next chapter so I know what I am reading ahead of time (for example chapter 3 was called “Jack at school”). The two strategies I used after I read are: 1) summarized the whole book in my head. 2) I discussed it with my mom.

The main idea of this book was explaining John (Jacks) life and who he was before and after his death. It talked about his youth up until chapter 4. I learned a lot while reading like, Jack was a very sick child since he got the scarlet fever ( a very cont-agious illness back then), his mother, Rose kept a box with flash cards of her children ( by 1932 9 in total) medical conditions, Jacks was the longest. I also learned he was a mischievous child,a slob and not so good of a student on the other hand, his older brother (by two years) Joe jr was not mischievous, very neat, and such a good student that when he went to boarding school he was named best student of the school in general since the school was founded! So he was often compared to his brother in a bad way. Then I learned a lot about what happened during the race against Nixon.

The text features of this book are the table of contents, bold faced words, a lot of pictures, and a bunch of caption.

The book is written in 3rd person point of view because some one was narrating. There were similes , and metaphors (because Jack was compared to a lot of things. The book had an even amount of his youth young adult hood and his adult hood.

If I were to re name the book a I named it: 1961-1963: The story of John F. Kennedy. The authors purpose of this was to inform.

I would rate this book 8-10 because this book had captions, quick facts ect but, I got bored while reading sometimes.

I recommend this book to kids that enjoy reading about presidents and history ages 10-15.

Sincerely,
Shianne Salazar :)

fairy tales rj #6

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading more fairy tales from the Hans Christian Fairy tale book. In general I did not enjoy reading a lot because the stories were so boring. Two strategies I used before reading were: plan which stories I would read. And if they were uncommon fairy tales I would try to think about what it was by the name. Two I used while reading were write down the name of each story I read. And summarize each story. Two I used after each story where: decide if they were boring or not and decide if I liked it. Yes they are the same strategies I used last week. But I really use them.

I read a bunch of stories this week such as religious stories, humor stories, and scary stories. But my favorite has to be THE little match girl. I liked this story because it was sad and meaningful. The story was about a very poor girl walking around on the street trying to sell matches. No one would buy them, but she didn't dare go home because if her father found out she didn't sell anything he'd beet her. So she sat there freezing then she dessied to light one of the matches then a wonderful goose dinner appeared then she lit another and a beautiful Christmas tree came then she lit a third one and her grandmother (who is now dead) appeared and they went on a journey. The next morning the police came to see the girl dead, she froze to death smiling.

These stories were written in second person point of view. I would rate them 6/10 because I didn't really enjoy reading that much but the stories did teach a good lesson about greed, love, and happiness. I recommend these stories to older kids ages 13-20.

sincerely,
shianne
