Dear Mrs. Zrihen,

I currently finished reading: Meet Kit: An American Girl. By: Valerie Tripp. My favorite parts of the book were when I got to read Kit's “newspaper headlines” she'd wright for her dad because she would always make mistakes on the type writer. (that's why I’m using this font).

I used 6 strategies while reading this book ( 2 before, 2 during, & 2 after).

Two before:
  1. I saw the movie, this helps me by getting taste of what it would be like ( but it was NOTHING like the movie)
  2. I I skimmed and scanned for text features, Pictures- let you make some imagery. Footnotes- extra information.

Two during:
  1. I summarized every chapter I read, this helps by seeing how much I understood
  2. If I did not understand something I would re-read it, this helps by having a better understanding of the book

Two after:
  1. I compared the book with the movie, this helps by seeing if the movie came through, but the only things that were the same were the characters physical & emotional traits.
  2. I discussed it with my mom, when you discuss it with someone it helps with your better understanding of the topic.

This book takes place in 1934 (the height of the depression), Kit Kittredge ,lives in Cincinnati with her family; her, dad, mom, and brother Charlie. Kit is a tomboy of those days, she is a journalist, everyday when her dad would come home, he would give her a news paper, and she would give him her own made newspaper, that she'd make with her typewriter, in each issue, Kit would write about the things that happened in the day, one day her mother hosts one of her gardening club's and Mrs. Howard starts complaining about the fact that her husband lost his job and has to go to Chicago to look for work. Kit's mom willingly invites Mrs. Howard and her son, Sterling to stay with them while her husband is away. When about 2 weeks pass and Kit has an accident with Mrs. Howard & her mother grounds her, she wrights a headline: IT'S NOT FAIR, for her dad to to read but then doesn't bother when she finds out that her father's car dealership closed out of business, and do to this her brother Charlie can't go to collage. Her mother comes up with the idea to start having borders, but do to this Kit now has to sleep in the attic.

The protagonist were: Kit, Mom, Dad, Charlie
The Antagonist were: Sterling, Mrs. Howard and Uncle

The genre of this book is Realistic fiction, the sub-genre is, historical fiction. The P.O.O is chronological because it's going by time. The P.O.V is 3rd person, it is this because someone is narrating. I liked that at the ending it had a little section called “looking back” it was a couple of pages about the1930's & the great depression.

I would rate this book 6/10, although the “looking back” & “meet the family” were cool, the book is no where as good as the movie, maybe if I never saw the movie I would have a different opinion. I would recommend this book to girls ages 10-14 who like to read historical fiction books.

Sincerely,

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,

I currently finished : Justin Bieber: First steps 2 forever: My story. BY: Justin Bieber. I got this book because I don't like Justin Bieber, but,i never had a reason to dislike him. So I wanted to read this book to see if I could actually have a reason to dislike him or become a fan. Neither happened.

I used six strategies while reading two before, after, and during.

Two before:

  1. I skimmed and scanned for text features (pictures, captions, footnotes, bold words) pictures give a little insight of the topic. Captions/ Footnotes help by letting you know what's going on or what something means. Bold words let you know a new topic is starting.
  2. I did a little research on Justin Bieber.

Two during:

  1. I summarized what I read
  2. I studied all the pictures

Two after:

  1. I discussed it with my mom.
  2. I discussed it with my friends Rebecca.

Justin Bieber's book is not very organized. Chapter 1 should be the prologue ( there is none), chapter 2 should be #5. Chapter 6 should be #3. He needs more experience in writhing. I found out a lot of things about Justin Bieber, like he really, really, REALLY. Likes girls. Not like a 14 year old that wants a girlfriend ( I am not referring to him) he is a totally different story. But the thing is hes not a dog. I'm not sure if he's trying to get reviews or if he's sincere, but in the book he seems down-to-earth. Also he speaks French, was teased in school, a fishing Wiz, had a kind of poor childhood, poor meaning money wise,he is really into his music, started play the drums at 5. I also got answers to some of my JB questions: Is Justin Bieber a family man? YES. Was Justin Bieber's Dad around? Yes.

The P.O.V was 1st person, he was speaking. The P.O.O was fact and opinion. The genre is non-fiction, the sub-genre was Autobiography/ Memoir. The text features were pictures, captions, footnotes, bold words.

I would rate this book 7/10 , although it was funny, and it had cool pictures, the book was unorganized and had bad vocabulary. I would recommend this book to girls ages 12-17 who like Justin Bieber & Disorganized books :)

Sincerely,
Shianne Salazar
